Almost thirty years has passed since Maria Luddy, Margaret MacCurtain and Mary O’Dowd issued their agenda for Irish women’s history. Highlighting the paucity of research on women's lives, the agenda identified the family as a potential avenue of fruitful research. Research on the family and family life has since made considerable strides; enhancing knowledge on women's reproductive cycles, their working lives, family relationships and contributions to the family economy.

This one-day symposium will reflect on the progress that has been made in the history of the Irish family. It aims to bring together established scholars, early career and postgraduate researchers working on all aspects of the history of the family and its relationships in Ireland, between 1550 and 1950. It intends to start new conversations, spark collaborations between established and upcoming scholars, and identify new directions in the research agenda of the Irish family.

Abstracts of 250 words are invited on themes that include, but are not limited to:

  • Family Relationships
  • Women & the Life-Cycle
  • Women & the Family Economy
  • Material Culture, Women & the Family
  • Emotion, Intimacy & the Family
  • Women Without Families
  • Men & the Family
  • Changing Interpretations of ‘Family’
