The graduate students from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities are pleased to announce that we will be hosting our annual conference, titled ''Tabú: 6th Annual Graduate Student Conference''. The conference will take place on March 29-30, 2019 in Minneapolis.

On the night of November 17, 1901, on ''la calle de la Paz'', located in what is today known as the heart of the historic center of Mexico City, the federal police burst into what has since called the ''Baile de los cuarenta y uno.'' During the party, 42 men, half of them dressed in women's clothing and the other half in suits, were arrested and humiliated in public for their sexual orientation.

The only participant to be excluded was Ignacio de la Torre y Mier, son-in-law of the President of Mexico, Porfirio Díaz. Since then, the number 41 has been associated with homosexuality and repudiated by Mexico's conservative and heteronormative culture. Nevertheless, this taboo opened the doors for transgression, inspiring the work of artists like José Guadalupe Posadas, Francisco L. Urquizo, and Fecundo, one of the precursors of gay literature in México. The 41 is not an isolated case, as taboo exists wherever language obfuscates that which does not adhere to normativity, and yet, at the same time, it forges a transgressive and defiant resoluteness. It is through war, the carnivalesque, humor and sexuality that these impositions are fractured. Taboo provokes reflection on the function of language, art, and literature.
