Applications are invited for Scholarships for Erasmus Mundus Master in Women’s and Gender Studies (GEMMA). The Erasmus Mundus scholarship covers the programme’s tuition fees and participation costs.

Scholarships offered in GEMMA belong to Action 1 strand of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission and are designed to cover some of the expenses students incur throughout their study period.

GEMMA is the first Erasmus +: Erasmus Mundus Master´s Degree in Women’s and Gender Studies in Europe. It is a programme of excellence supported by the European Commission, which has selected it as an Erasmus Mundus Master Course three consecutive times (in 2006, 2011 and 2017) and distinguished from an average of 150 project proposals submitted annually as “a (…) project and model in the field of Women’s Studies and Gender Studies in a European and global perspective”.

Scholarship Description

  • Applications Deadline: February 15, 2019
  • Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue Master degree programme.
  • Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in Women’s and Gender Studies (GEMMA).
  • Scholarship Award: The Erasmus Mundus scholarship covers the programme’s tuition fees and participation costs. Additionally, the scholarship includes a monthly contribution to subsistence costs (1.000 euros during the 24-month duration of the Programme) and a yearly contribution to the travel and installation costs. The GEMMA Consortium pays the grants to students according to specific payment arrangements which are communicated to the grantees in advance.
  • Nationality: Students from EU and from outside European Union are eligible to apply.
  • Number of Scholarships: Numbers not given
  • Scholarship can be taken in Spain

Eligibility for the Scholarship

Eligible Countries: Students from EU and from outside European Union are eligible to apply.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Candidates should be in possession of at least a University Bachelor degree (or its equivalent: 180 ECTS, minimum 3 years of study).
  2. Candidates should have proven knowledge of the language of instruction of the GEMMA Home Institution and of the language of the Mobility Institution (please see the “Languages” section of the instructions below for more details).
  3. Candidates must correctly fill in the online application form, including all attachments, and be able to post hard copies of all required documents when requested to do so.
  4. Candidates must submit their application within the deadline.
  5. Candidates must be able to commit to full-time study during the 2 years period of the course and must be able to complete the compulsory international mobility route.
  6. Candidates must indicate the preferences for the mobility route – all combinations are possible provided that they include two different universities in two different European countries (it is therefore not possible to select Granada-Oviedo and Oviedo-Granada).
  7. Candidates from outside the European Union must be able to meet all legal visa proceedings.

PARTNER COUNTRY scholarships can be awarded to students selected by the GEMMA Consortium who come from a partner country (Non EU) other than a Programme country and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) in a Programme country (EU) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years.   • Only candidates, who have applied to and have been accepted by the GEMMA Consortium in accordance with its specific student application and selection criteria, are eligible for an Erasmus+ scholarship in GEMMA.
  • Students can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship to the Erasmus Mundus Action 1 joint programme (máster o doctorate) of their choice but the number of applications must be limited to a maximum of three different joint programmes.
  • Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a higher education degree or demonstrate a recognized equivalent level of learning according to national legislation and practices.
  • Individuals who have already benefited from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship are not eligible for a second scholarship for the same or another Erasmus+ programme.
  • Students who have obtained their last academic degree in the same country in which they wish to complete part of their Erasmus Mundus programme are also ineligible. Please see page 116 of the new Erasmus+ Programme Guide available HERE.
  • Students benefiting from an EMJMD scholarship cannot receive another EU grant while pursuing their Erasmus+ Master’s studies.

English Language Requirements: English: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Proficiency test or equivalent

Spanish: Instituto Cervantes DELE certificate or equivalent

Italian: Dante Institute standard test or equivalent

Language requirements may vary depending on the university. In the case of the Universities of Utrecht, as well as Central European University, TOEFL and IELTS tests are recommended, although other official certificates may be considered.

Application Procedure

How to Apply: Candidates should complete the application form in all sections. Applications can be completed in any of the official teaching languages of the GEMMA Consortium (English, Italian or Spanish). However, candidates should fill in the application in the language of instruction of the institution they choose as their 1st preference home university. Therefore, if you are applying to Granada or Oviedo as the 1st preference home university, you should fill in the application in Spanish, while if you are applying to CEU, York, Lodz or Utrecht, you should do so in English. For Bologna, you can use either English or Italian. Failure to choose the correct language for your application could result in automatic rejection.

The application form should be submitted online via the GEMMA webpage. Only exceptionally, if this was not possible due to technical difficulties, candidates may email it to gemma-at-ugr.es, always before the deadline and after having informed the central coordination about the nature of the difficulties experienced.

  2. Diploma (where necessary, the candidate must provide a translation into any of the GEMMA working languages)
  3. Official transcript of academic records (where necessary, the candidate must provide a translation into any of the GEMMA working languages)
  4. Separate Average grade certificate (if not included in the Official transcripts of Academic Records)
  5. Language certificate (GEMMA Home University)
  6. Language certificate (GEMMA Mobility University)
  7. Motivation letter 8. A photocopy of the candidate’s passport
  8. Proof of residence at the time of applying
  9. Letters of recommendation
