You will help support a wide range of experiments at our gas gun and pulsed power facilities as needed. You will help to design and analyze dynamic material experiments, design and implement new diagnostics, and make important material property measurements. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Apply existing or develop new capabilities for measuring the thermodynamic and constitutive response of various metals, polymers, geological materials, and/or energetics + Perform hydrodynamic computer simulations for the design and analysis of experiments, as well as model calibration and validation + Collaborate with internal and external scientists on research in the broad areas of dynamic material properties and high energy density science. + Contribute to the scientific community through the presentation at international conferences and publication in peer-reviewed journals of your research

+ You will have a PhD in the physical sciences, engineering, material science or a closely related discipline and a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics + Technical competency in one or more of the following areas as demonstrated through publications in refereed journals: shock physics, high energy density physics, high speed diagnostics, high pressure physics, geophysics, or material science + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and presentations + Experience working in a collaborative team environment + Experience with any of the following: shock physics, high pressure physics, high energy density physics, equations of state, or constitutive properties + Experience with experiments using high-risk facilities such as high-voltage systems, laser diagnostics, x-ray sources, and gas guns + Experience with high speed diagnostic instrumentation such as laser interferometry (VISAR and or PDV), streak and/or framing cameras, digitizers, x-ray diffraction, pyrometry, flash x-ray generators. + Working knowledge of Matlab, Python, and/or C++

Department Description:

The Dynamic Material Properties Department at Sandia National Laboratories (Department 1646) performs experimental measurements of dynamic material properties at high pressures, including material equations of state, phase diagrams, kinetics of phase transformations, constitutive properties, transport properties, and the behavior of components under dynamic loading. Experiments are executed with a variety of drivers from hyper velocity gas guns to the most powerful pulsed-power facility in the world: the 26 million ampere Z facility. The focus of the department is dynamic material properties experiments using both high-pressure shock waves and shockless compression techniques. The department is responsible for designing, executing, diagnosing, analyzing, and documenting dynamic material properties experiments on the Z facility, the Dynamic Integrated Compression Experimental (DICE) facility and the Shock Thermodynamic Applied Research (STAR) facility at Sandia National Laboratories.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO Statement:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status. : This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
