The Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Aberdeen and the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism at the University of Notre Dame wish to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to develop the project ‘Irish Religious Women in Anglophone World, 1840-1960’. 

Although the position is based at the University of Aberdeen, the successful applicant will divide their time between Aberdeen and the Rome Global Gateway of the University of Notre Dame. The ability and willingness to undertake sustained research in Rome is a necessary condition of appointment. 

The main purpose of this role is to design and pursue independent research on the theme of Irish religious women in the Anglophone world in the period 1830-1960. This may include an examination of the spatial, temporal, or archival distribution of Irish religious women in the English-speaking world, including their engagement with the Holy See. The successful candidate will develop his/her own research approach with a view to designing, writing, and submitting future grant applications in collaboration with the Research Institute for Irish and Scottish Studies and the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism.

Applicants should have demonstrable experience of high-quality research in modern ecclesiastical history, the history of women religious, and/or the Irish diaspora. Applicants must also have demonstrable experience of working in the archives of Rome and the Holy See, and a reading knowledge of Italian and Latin. A reading knowledge of additional modern European languages is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to manage their own research and organise conferences, workshops or symposia. Knowledge of website design would also be beneficial. 

Applicants should have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in a relevant field.

Salary will be paid at the rate of £33,199 per annum on Grade 6 of the University Salary Scale. Consideration will be given to making an appointment at Research Assistant level for individuals in the final stages of completing their PhD on Grade 5 (£31,302 per annum).

Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 12 month probation period.
