Proposals are invited for a Symposium, "Interrogating Intersectionality in a Global Perspective" to be held at Liverpool Hope University (UK) on 21 June 2019.  The symposium seeks to interrogate the potential and limitations of Intersectional approaches within a global context.  It is part of an AHRC funded International Networking Project that seeks to scope the potential and limitations of intersectionality in relation to both theory and praxis. In keeping with this broad-based agenda, the organisers seek contributions from any discipline and welcome interdisciplinary approaches.

Within Gender and Women studies, a woman’s subject status is claimed, held, and negotiated at the intersection of competing sources of disadvantage and discrimination. Class, race, caste, age, and religion are among the factors that act within overlapping realms to shape women’s lives in complex ways within different social and national contexts. We are seeking to explore the tensions that emerge between theory and lived experience; between professional practice and theoretical models of gender and community interaction; and between public pronouncements of gender equality and representations of identity in historiography, literature, art, film, and popular culture.

Papers exploring intersectionality within any social and national context are welcome. Theoretical papers are welcome as are historical, biographical, sociological, political, literary, filmic, artistic, and cultural case studies, including practice-based research.  Among possible topics are: postcolonial experience and intersectional perspectives; Orientalism and the dynamics of intersectionality; organisational policies and intersectional realities; expressions of intersectionality within artistic practice; the analyst’s positionality within analyses of intersectionality; the dangers of and to intersectional analyses; intersectionality and generational feminist politics; intersectionality and the articulation of international feminist politics and perspectives; stereotypes and intersectionality; Eurocentrism and intersectionality; religious practices and intersectional politics; totalising narratives and intersectionality; the politics of literary form and linguistic structures in relation to intersectionality.
