Postdoctoral Research Associate for Two-phase Models of Oceanic & Continental Rifting

Страна: Великобритания;

Дедлайн: 17.04.2019

The Department seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work under Professor Richard Katz. The project that the Research Assistant will work on concerns the central role of magmatism at divergent plate boundaries. The Research Assistant will lead a collaboration to develop, test and apply computational models of the two-phase thermo-mechanics of partially molten rocks in the lithosphere and asthenosphere. Application will be made to oceanic and continental rifting, from pre-inception through stable spreading, using observations to validate and constrain models. The East African Rift and Juan de Fuca Ridge will be of particular relevance to the project; results will be analysed in terms of the mechanical, thermodynamic and chemical role of magmatism in promoting and shaping the rift.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in geodynamics, theoretical and/or applied mechanics, planetary physics, petrological thermodynamics or applied mathematics at the time of start the post; an excellent publication track record; and experience with computational modelling of continuum mechanical phenomena. Also desirable is knowledge of chemical thermodynamics, material plasticity, continental geology and/or marine geophysics.

This project is funded by European Research Council.

For further details of the post please see the further particulars.

The deadline for applications is 12.00 midday on 17 April 2019. Interviews are due to take place on late April/early May 2019.
