At the Department of Informatics, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within Computational Biology Unit and the Sars Centre, a partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory - EMBL. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is funded by the Norwegian Cancer Society

The Department of informatics has seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. All the groups are successfully cofunded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department offers state of art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

About the Project/Work Tasks:

The research group is interdisciplinary spanning both computational and experimental work and is headed by Eivind Valen. The position is within the project “Metastatic in translation - decoding the protein synthesis program for metastatic potential”, and the position is available from May 2019.

The abundance of RNA in a cancer cell is only weakly predictive of its protein content. Together with the vast evidence for misregulation of protein synthesis this has strongly implicated translational regulation as one of the key culprits in cancer. The initiation phase of translation has in particular been described as a nexus for cancer misregulation and the road onwards, towards metastasis, involves major alterations to the translational program. Using cutting edge molecular methods to map the global translation of all genes simultaneously and analyzing these with state-of-the-art bioinformatic methods we will unravel the genome-wide translational programs underlying the evolution towards increasing metastatic potential.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within molecular biology or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded
  • Experience with basic molecular biology methods is a requirement.
  • Experience with next generation sequencing and assays for assessing translational regulation is an advantage, but strong candidates with experience in related techniques may be considered
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Eligibility Criteria:

Your application must include:

  • A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • The names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
  • CV
  • Transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted
  • Relevant certificates/references
  • List of any works of a scientific nature (publication list)
  • Any publications in your nam

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge by 17.04.2019
