Job Purpose

The role holder will be responsible for managing the Mass Spectrometry for Chemistry Research Facility in the School of Chemistry, which will include organising the staff working in the Facility on a day-to-day basis to ensure that work is carried out efficiently and effectively. They will have a wealth of expertise and experience of a wide range of mass spectrometry techniques and their application to problem-solving. They will run, and oversee the running of, samples submitted to the service.They will be able to tackle the most challenging analyses and ensure that the results delivered are correct and meaningful. They will assist less experienced members of the team when necessary, and provide training as appropriate. They will liaise with users, ensuring that they understand the results that are being delivered and, where appropriate, work with them to interpret results, elucidate structures and resolve challenging analyses. They will be responsible for training users in the use of the spectrometers and ensuring competency, and provide advice where needed.

The role holder will be responsible for the maintenance of instrumentation.


Person Specification

The role holder should be thorough and diligent in their approach. It is expected that they will be highly adaptable and flexible given the variety of duties involved. They will be expected to operate in a mostly independent and unsupervised manner.



  • Mass spectrometry skills (see also Knowledge and Experience). Management skills.
  • The ability to work proactively, independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, both verbal and written; the role holder will be expected to interact with a variety of users, Academic staff and colleagues.
  • Good technical skills, including those required for equipment repair and maintenance.



  • A first degree in a science, technology or engineering subject.
  • A PhD is highly desirable.


Knowledge and Experience

  • Significant expertise and experience in a wide range of mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Experience of user training and management.
  • Experience of instrument maintenance and repair.
  • The role holder must be familiar with laboratory Health and Safety issues and possess good Health and Safety awareness and have an excellent work ethic.
