The University of Birmingham wishes to appoint a 0.5 FTE Research Fellow in Future Thinking with effect from 1st September 2019 until 30th August 2022. The Fellow will work in close partnership with Professor Max Saunders and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within a specific interdisciplinary research project based between the College of Arts and Law and the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. 

We seek someone with a successfully examined PhD and research interests in modern and contemporary culture and society. The Fellow's disciplinary background is likely to include one or more of the following: STS, Informatics, Sociology, Medicine, Neurology, Medical Humanities, Digital Humanities, Cultural Studies, Geography, Environmental Science, Architecture, Engineering, Philosophy, International Relations, or Security Studies; though applicants with relevant interests in other fields may also apply. 

The project will undertake a comparative study of the methodologies of future thinking across a broad range of disciplines, taking in concepts of forecasting, foresight, horizon scanning, urban planning, climate science, scenario planning etc. 

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism and a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications 
• High level analytical capability 
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly 
• Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones 
• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively 
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes 
• Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
