The Rowett Institute is one of the foremost nutrition research institutes in Europe undertaking research to address some of the most compelling contemporary problems in nutrition. Much of our research is funded by the Scottish Government’s Strategic Research Programme and we are seeking a postdoctoral Research Fellow in health or agricultural economics to work in Theme 3 – Food, Health and Wellbeing.

The post involves a range of strategic research and knowledge exchange activities, specifically designed to meet the requirements of many stakeholders in the public and private sectors of two areas: (1) Estimate impact of taxation on dietary change in Scotland; and (2) assess the impact of sustainable diets on the food and drink supply chain in Scotland. In particular, to understand how a sustainable healthy diet for Scotland may affect Scottish land use change.

We are looking for an economist or agricultural economist with a specific focus on food economics. You will formulate a microeconomic model of the consumer that can be applied to evaluate the effect that taxes on ingredients or specific foods may have on the nutritional quality of the diet and the role they play in helping meet nutritional recommendations. In order to assess the change in demand for food and drink you will compile and prepare statistical information and map food categories into commodities in preparation for use in modelling. Two available methodologies will be blended to produce a formulated model to evaluate the impact on sustainability (e.g., economic, environmental and social) of the adoption of sustainable diets. One of these methodologies based on the Input-Output analysis has already been produced; the second one aims at modelling the supply of agricultural outputs in Scotland and, as part of it, to infer the demand for inputs/resources such as a land and water.

The candidate should have post-graduate qualifications to PhD level (or very near to completion) within the fields of economics or agricultural economics. Understanding and experience analysing (i.e., using econometric methods and statistics) agricultural and food economics data (e.g., production, consumption), the interaction of food, health (nutrition) and the environment and reporting clearly results are essential. Excellent communication skills are also essential, as is the ability to work as a member of multi-disciplinary teams.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 salary scale (£33,199 - £39,610 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience. Consideration will be given to making an appointment at Research Assistant, Grade 5 level in the first instance (£27,831 - £31,302 per annum) for individuals in the final stages of completing their PhD.

Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 12 month probation period.
