An excellent opportunity exists for three Research Fellow positions based in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton. This is part of an ESRC-funded research project with the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University that will digitise a large number of historical Gallup polls conducted in Britain between 1945 and 1991 and study change in social and political attitudes over this period. The project team is led by Professor Will Jennings (Southampton) and Professor Peter Enns (Cornell).

The project will digitise codebooks of over 2,000 surveys conducted by Gallup’s UK affiliate (‘Social Surveys (Gallup Poll) Limited’), and will convert around 700 of these from antiquated ‘column binary’ format to contemporary software and non-proprietary formats. It will also create a merged dataset based on individual surveys, and promote the use of this new data resource by other researchers. The project team will use this new data to track and understand long-term dynamics of public opinion in Britain. The Research Fellows will receive specialist training in the processing of column binary format data from the Roper Center.

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world Universities and one of the UK’s top 15 research–intensive universities. The Department of Politics & International Relations (PAIR) was ranked 5th in the UK for the quality of its research outputs in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The department is internationally recognised for its research on democracy and public opinion. Further information on all aspects of PAIR can be found on our web pages at http://www.southampton.ac.uk/politics . Information about the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences can be found at www.southampton.ac.uk/socsci .

Successful candidates will have completed or be near to completing a PhD degree* in political science or the social sciences (or equivalent experience) and possess some experience of survey research.

Each Research Fellow will be based at the University of Southampton and will be responsible for conversion of column binary format data from historical Gallup surveys to SPSS, Stata or other similar formats, the production of supporting documentation and creation of a merged data set for use by other researchers. They will also conduct their own research on social and political change in Britain using these new data.

The positions are fixed-term, tenable for 24 months starting as early as possible and by 1st October 2019 at the latest. You will be line-managed by Professor Will Jennings but will also report to Professor Peter Enns of the Roper Center.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
