Linguistic Evidence has as its specialism the relationship between elicited data types such as experimentation, field work, and questionnaires and linguistic theory building in the field of syntax and semantics. The aim of this biannual conference series is to provide an occasion where linguists who wish to combine attention to empirical adequacy with theoretical informedness can meet and learn from each other. The central aim is to promote the integration of experimental and theory-driven approaches to the study of language.
Research across disciplinary boundaries in which theoretical and/or experimental linguists work together with colleagues in adjacent fields is always welcome, as are meta-studies which address issues around the collection and processing of elicited data.
Call for Papers:
Linguistic theory enriched by experimental data
Linguistic Evidence 2020 is the tenth in this series, which has run since 2004. The aim of the event is to provide an academic context in which researchers with an interest in empirically adequate linguistic theory can meet like-minded colleagues and discuss their work. The unique feature of this conference is its focus on developing linguistic theory by means of improvements in the data basis. In particular, the focus is on the added value for syntactic and semantic theory building of the collection of elicited data. Many studies report experimental results, but other elicited data types, such as field work and questionnaires, are equally welcome. For this reason papers at Linguistic Evidence will usually have both an empirical and a theoretical component.
Linguistic theory has made remarkable progress in providing accounts of the sometimes puzzling phenomena of human language. In particular the insight that the most explanatory approach can be rather more abstract than a superficial analysis might suggest has proved itself in many cases. Sometimes these higher-level generalizations are not immediately apparent but are revealed only in more detailed data. The motivation for the Linguistic Evidence conference series is to pursue this empirically adequate but theoretically informed approach. Papers which draw from multiple fields or in which theoretical and/or experimental linguists work together with colleagues in adjacent fields are very welcome, as is work which addresses the practical issues around the collection and processing of elicited data.
At each Linguistic Evidence conference a special session is offered. The title for this at Linguistic Evidence 2020 is: “Elicited Evidence and the Syntax/Semantics/Pragmatics Interfaces”. Work related to this topic is thus particularly welcome.
We invite contributions which employ empirical methods in the collection of experimental, crosslinguistic or diachronic data to elucidate aspects of syntactic or semantic theory and their interface phenomena.
We will publish Online Proceedings. Every talk and poster presentation will be considered for publication within this volume.
