Course description

In this Campus course we aim to provide balanced discussion and information about genetic inheritance in ART, especially within the context of gamete donation. Key concepts of the meeting will include how individuals and couples may balance the limited chance of having their own genetic child against the greater chance of having a healthy baby using donor gametes. Specifically, the course will cover i) how current technology has abolished the concept of donor anonymity; ii) counselling and information provision on the role of genetics in bringing up a child; iii) the transition of couples to the use of donor gametes and the role of the healthcare provider in decision-making; iv) the importance of providing clear information about success rates in all scenarios and its relevance to patients; v) current and future implications for interaction between donor-conceived children and donors. Key roles for the care team will be examined alongside discussion of how information presentation may affect decision-making processes.

  • Discuss the effect of own-genetics and donor genetic risks on child health
