The Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) at the University of York wishes to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to contribute to and support its research. We are particularly keen to appoint in the area of environment and global development, where you will join an existing interdisciplinary team. Your work will be varied and require expertise in one or more of the following areas as they relate to development: biodiversity, ecosystem services, global health, climate change, natural hazards, and sustainability. You will have a completed PhD, or have submitted one and be awaiting examination in Politics, Environment, Geography, International Development or a cognate field, and be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary setting. You will also have an interest in stakeholder engagement, experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, and writing up research work for publication. Please note that the successful candidate will be required normally to work in IGDC in York.

As a Post-Doctoral Research Associate, you will conduct research under the supervision of the Directors of IGDC and support the work of the Centre. You will be expected to carry out analysis and/or modelling of primary and secondary environmental data, undertake reviews of primary literature, interpret mixed quantitative and qualitative data and be enthusiastic in working with other researchers across traditional disciplinary boundaries. You will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects in the environment-health nexus in the Latin American and Caribbean region, which address the inter-relationships between environmental change, natural hazards, vulnerability and resilience. In this context, an understanding of written and spoken Spanish would be an advantage although not essential. Your research will contribute primary evidence to support policy and practice in global development, and also synthesise existing evidence to address key development challenges. Your work will involve direct liaison with external partners, including overseas organisations, and you will be encouraged to develop new partnerships that will be of strategic benefit to the work of the IGDC. You will be expected to take a lead role in the analysis and publication of the work and contribute to drafting major grant proposals from the IGDC. You will also be encouraged to develop your own research ideas in related areas, leading to publications and grant applications.

The post is available for 12 months in the first instance.

Informal enquiries can be made to Piran White ( piran.white@york.ac.uk )
