Postdoctoral Research Associate in Antarctic Ice Sheet Uncertainty Quantification

We seek a Postdoctoral Research Associate to carry out modelling and analysis of uncertainty of dynamic ice loss from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet over the next century. The post is funded by the NERC Discovery Science project "QUoRUM: QUantifying and Reducing Uncertainty in ice-sheet Model predictions".

QUoRUM aims:
1) Improve the predictive capability of models of large-scale ice-sheet dynamics through novel methods for assimilation of remotely-observed data;
2) Quantify of the uncertainty of this assimilation and how it impacts projections of sea-level rise;
3) Determine which observations impact most greatly upon projections of ice-sheet loss, in order to inform future observational campaigns.

QUoRUM will make use of automatic code generation libraries as well as high-level algorithmic differentiation to aid with optimisation-based data assimilation and quantification of uncertainties.

You will join a team of investigators in the Schools of GeoSciences and Mathematics in the University of Edinburgh, with expertise in ice-sheet and climate modelling, remote sensing, and automatic code generation for finite element modelling. Your work will focus on refining an existing ice-sheet dynamics assimilation and uncertainty-quantification framework (ICE_tangent) and applying it to a multidecadal observational record of the Amundsen region of West Antarctica, a region undergoing high rates of ice loss.

The post is full time, fixed term until the 31st December 2022.
Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum
