Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Quantum Condensed Matter Theory - Parameswaran Group (up to two posts) The Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics, Clarendon Laboratory, Department of Physics, Oxford Grade 7: £32,817 - £40,322 p.a.
Applications are invited for up to two Postdoctoral Research Assistants to perform research on the theory of condensed matter working primarily with Professor S A Parameswaran. The positions are supported from an ERC Starting grant on Topological Matter and Crystalline Symmetries.

The posts are available for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting on 1 October 2020 (or mutually agreed date shortly before/after), with possible extension for a third year contingent on performance and funding. The successful candidates will work in collaboration with Prof. Parameswaran on research supported by the grant, but will also have the ability to interact and/or collaborate with other members of the quantum condensed matter theory group [Professors J T Chalker, F Essler, P Fendley, D E Logan and S Simon].

The positions allow considerable flexibility in research topics, but the grant has as its main theme the interplay of topological properties, emergent gauge structures, and crystal symmetries in strongly correlated systems, examined using both analytical and numerical techniques.

Postholders are expected to conduct research in collaboration with Professor Parameswaran and other members of the theoretical condensed matter physics group at Oxford University. Duties will include carrying out research in theoretical physics within the general areas supported by the ERC grant; related tasks will include collaborating in the preparation of reports and journal articles, presenting papers at conferences and workshops, and representing the group at meetings/seminars. The postholders will have the opportunity to teach.

The successful candidates will hold (or be about to complete) a PhD/DPhil in physics, or a closely related field. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: topological aspects of quantum condensed matter physics, particularly as applied to interacting systems; quantum field theory methods, particularly non-perturbative techniques, symmetries, and dualities; numerical tensor-network methods applied to correlated systems in two dimensions.

As it is also envisaged that a subset of the research projects will have a strong link to experiment, and may involve close collaboration with experimental groups both at Oxford and elsewhere, previous experience of such collaboration is highly desirable. Further particulars for this position are provided below.

You will be required to upload a CV (including a list of publications) and a brief statement of research interests as part of your application. You will also be asked to provide details of at least two referees. Candidates should ensure that referees submit all references to by the closing date. Documents submitted should be in PDF format and use the naming convention: APPLICANT SURNAME, FORENAME - REFEREE SURNAME,FORENAME”.

Please note that applicants will be considered only for the advertised recruitment. If they wish to be considered for any other similar positions advertised by the University, they must submit a separate application for those posts.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Parameswaran at: .

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 15 November 2019.

The University of Oxford and Department of Physics are Athena SWAN Silver Award holders.
