Project description

We are looking for PhD applicants with a background in physics, material sciences, chemistry, or engineering to work on an industrially funded (Huawei) programme to develop next generation erbium doped fibres and optical amplifiers for high capacity optical communication systems. The successful candidate will be part of a world-leading research team working on fibre fabrication and fibre amplifiers at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC).

The introduction of Er-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs), which amplify signals transmitted in the lowest loss window (~1550nm) of silica based single mode fibre, has resulted in a breakthrough in fibre optical transmission systems, increasing the capacity of current commercial global networks to the tens of terabit/s regime. As the demand for higher optical fibre data transmission capacity is increasing, with year-on-year growth of 40%, there is great interest in studying new amplifiers that can overcome the bandwidth limitations of conventional EDFAs. This research project will focus on the development of low-loss erbium-doped optical fibres (EDFs) based on novel glass compositions and fibre structures in order to support |a much wider erbium gain bandwidth than the state-of-the-art silica based EDFs and the demonstration of wideband EDFAs to increase the transmission capacity of future optical communication networks. 

Throughout the PhD, the candidate will have access to state-of-the-art fibre fabrication facilities and laboratories at the ORC and will be working alongside our sponsor. You will gain a broad range of technical and professional skills while having the opportunity to publish your work in high-impact journals. 

Full tuition fees paid scholarship with a stipend of £18,000 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years. Overseas students are also encouraged to apply.
