The aim of this multidisciplinary conference is to provide scholars in the field of EtR languages and accessible communication an opportunity to share their research. It also aims to advance networking of professionals interested in adapted language for communication with people having various difficulties in understanding standard forms of language.

Call for Papers:

After the successful launch of the KLAARA Conference on easy-to-read (EtR) language research in Helsinki 2019, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the second international KLAARA conference. It takes place on the 31st August and 1st September 2020 in Olten, Switzerland.

There is a growing awareness that access to information and barrier-free communication is a prerequisite for persons to participate as self-determined and equal citizens at all areas of society. Article 2 of the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities includes the use of easily understandable language as a means of achieving this. Against the background that accessible language benefits numerous other target groups, there is a growing interest in and more research on the topic. Changes in society increase the demand for research-based standards, practices, and applications in various social contexts. On the theoretical side, EtR has to be seen in the broader context of participation, addressee orientation, communication, comprehensibility, literacy and intralingual translation.
Studies from different disciplinary perspectives will be presented and discussed, as e.g. social sciences, linguistics, special education, translation studies, visual communication and information design. Contributions may be addressing topics as for example principles and standards, text types, target groups, services, user participation and text checking, instructions and cooperation with text owners, education in/on EtR, language policy, empirical verification of guidelines, methods etc.

The conference organizers invite abstracts for section papers, posters and workshops.
Section papers and posters should be based on completed or research in progress. Workshops may also be aiming to connect people on new topics or provisional ideas.
Abstracts for papers and posters must be maximum 300 words, excluding references. They should articulate: the objectives or questions being addressed; the conceptual or theoretical perspectives informing the work; where appropriate, the methodology; and the contribution to knowledge in light of the conference topics.
Workshop proposals should include: the workshop purpose and its relationship to the conference topics; details of the program and the expected contribution of the workshop.
