The Department of Linguistics at Université de Paris (newly created by merging Paris Descartes and Paris Diderot) is expected to open a position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Maître de Conférences - MCF) in computational semantics, starting in Fall 2020.

The Paris Diderot Computational Linguistics (CL) curriculum was the first of its kind in France (first class in 1984), and has always been characterised by the ambition to offer, in a linguistics department specialised in formal linguistics, quality training in computer science, with requirements comparable to those of scientific training. To support this multidisciplinary ambition, the curriculum grounds its training in both linguistics and computer science departments.

Research & Teaching:
Research will be conducted within the Laboratoire de linguistique formelle (LLF - UMR 7110 / CNRS and Université de Paris – http://www.llf.cnrs.fr/en). The research profile of the position is in computational semantics, at the crossroads of linguistics, computer science and mathematics.

The candidate is expected to formulate a world-class research project in the field of computational semantics and be able to supervise students in this field. The prospects for integration into the LLF will have to be discussed, in particular within the computational linguistics strand (http://www.llf.cnrs.fr/en/research-topics). A formal semantic and/or experimental semantic component will be a plus. Research may also be carried out within the framework of the LabEx Empirical Foundations of Linguistics (EFL, http://www.labex-efl.com) and in particular its strand 5 "computational semantics".

The candidates will have to demonstrate a solid knowledge of linguistics and computer science. They will be able to teach fundamental courses in the LI curriculum, including courses in computational semantics, logic, formal foundations of NLP, as well as "Discovery" Bachelor's degree courses (e. g. “logic and language”, “language and artificial intelligence”). With a good knowledge of current NLP applications, they will be able to supervise students’ projects. They may also be involved in the Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics program (at the L3 or master level), for example in semantics, corpus processing, or experimental methods. The ability to participate in the new Data Science Master’s degree of the Mathematics Dpt. is a plus that will be appreciated.

Teaching covers the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. The successful candidate will be able to teach computational linguistics and machine learning methods in the CL curriculum, but must also demonstrate a solid general knowledge of both the underlying mathematical and computational foundations and the theoretical foundations in linguistics. The candidate should have good knowledge of the current application tasks in NLP and be able to supervise student projects. Ability to teach in the core curriculum of the Master's degree in Language Sciences (methodological courses, such as corpus processing, experimental methods or more fundamental courses) is a plus that will be appreciated.

Mandatory Qualification:
- For all candidates (French and international) “qualification” by the French National University Committee is requested before they can apply for a position. For the qualification stage, registration and application submission before October 24th, 2019, 4 P.M. (Paris time) on the Galaxie website (see URL above).

Application proper starts in February (u-paris.fr). Tentative deadline : March 26, 2020.

The job starts on September 1st, 2020.
