As we enter the second decade of the 21st century it has become evident to most, but not all, leaders in our global economy that the existing policies governing the behaviour of large corporations and financial institutions have not prevented the greed of a few powerful and wealthy individuals from condoning actions which cause environmental degradation and the exhaustion of non-renewable resources.
Finance practitioners have put considerable effort into understanding responsible practices and are integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into investment decision-making and processes. It is equally critical for academic scholars to turn their research towards the many topics in responsible finance, including:
- Preventing unethical financial practices such as fraud, market manipulation, and other professional misconduct. These have always been difficult to detect and deter, despite ever increasing regulations about market abuse. Yet such practices are behind most corporate scandals and have clearly contributed to every financial and economic crisis since the great depression in the 1920s;
- The significant social interest in sustainable financial products should lead to a flourishing of such investments. Policy makers are now advancing their initiatives, but there is still a strong need for academic research to provide guidance on sustainable finance issues;
- Environmental and climate finance research promotes awareness of the consequences of climate change. This strand of the academic literature also plays a crucial role in providing academic guidance to countries on mitigating environmental variability and adapting to its impacts.
