English Language learning and Assessment (ELLA) has an opening for a Research Project Manager. This research center conducts research on assessments for English learners in the U.S. and abroad, aims to advance foundational knowledge and improve practices in assessing English language proficiency in academic and workplace settings, and develops knowledge and capabilities to support new teaching and learning solutions for language learners of all ages worldwide. 

This position is particularly oriented towards an individual with expertise and/or experience in second language teaching, language learning instructional design, curriculum and materials development, technology-mediated language teaching and learning, and language assessment, with a particular focus on young-to-adolescent language learners. 

The Research Project Manager (RPM) provides technical and project management support to research and development projects by collaborating with Principal Investigators, RPMs, other Research & Development team members and ETS departments, vendors, clients, and research participants. The RPM demonstrates success in managing research projects (e.g., resources, timeline, and deliverables); plans, coordinates and executes the scope of work of research projects; takes a lead role in coordinating staff efforts across multiple roles (e.g., research assistants/associates, scientists, data analysts, engineers) and areas (e.g., IT, legal, and business units); and has detailed knowledge of research methodology, data management and analysis). The RPM may:

  • Contribute as co-author to presentations or publications;
  • Serve as Co-PI on smaller research projects;
  • Supervise Research Assistants;
  • Develop language learning experiences and materials.

Responsibilities:

Project Management 

  • At an intermediate level, plan, organize, and facilitate the execution of all aspects of simple research and development project work (e.g., resources, scope, timeline, budget, etc.). Anticipate, identify, and escalate project issues or concerns; develop actionable recommendations for solving project issues and concerns in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Define work objectives, plans, priorities and deadlines and delegate routine tasks appropriately.
  • Develop and monitor project budgets and work plans for all phases of projects. Support accurate project resource forecasting (i.e., people and budget).
  • Identify and recommend changes and modifications for the quality and/or cost effectiveness of discrete phases of research and development projects. 
  • Have intermediate knowledge of ETS policies and procedures (e.g., IRB, subject payment, working with minors, standards for fairness and quality, travel, etc.) and ensure that they are implemented. 
  • Plan, participate, and or lead external meetings with research and development partners and clients, manage closing activities for a simple project, including documentation and filing of data, information, reports, etc. 

Functional / Technical Skills 

  • Serve as a technical resource to the senior staff in proposing, planning, designing and implementing research and development projects. 
  • Have detailed knowledge in one or more functional/technical areas (e.g., product/capability development, assessment design, data analysis and management, quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies, recruitment, test administration, coding, annotation, scoring). The functional/technical knowledge is methodological in nature and can be applied to a variety of simple projects or aspects of projects (e.g., advise on, design and develop data analysis plans; perform, interpret and revise analyses of data, including utilizing specialized statistical programs; advise on, synthesize and interpret results; advise on, design and prepare charts, tables, figures, and graphics for reports and presentations). Review completed work of RAs to verify technical soundness and adherence to policies and deadlines. 

Communication (Internal / External)

  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders both orally and in writing using language and terminology relevant to the specific discipline and/or research methodology, and appropriate for the intended stakeholders. Identify and address communication issues within projects. 
  • Collaborate on proposals, manuscripts, and presentations with senior staff.
  • Review oral and written communication of junior staff and detect and address communication issues.
  • Provide review for proposals, reports, and presentations. 

Leadership 

  • Coach, mentor, and motivate junior staff in a fair and consistent manner to achieve goals, providing specific feedback, growth, and development opportunities.
  • Lead either a team of direct reports or a project team to successful completion of a simple research project.

Experience and Skills

Educations, Certifications, or Special Licenses:

  • A Master's degree is required, with preference for a degree related to applied linguistics, TESOL, educational technology, or similar. 

Relevant Years of Experience Required:

  • Six years of progressively responsible research management experience or a combination of research and commensurate language teaching and/or curriculum/materials/assessment development experience are necessary, providing evidence of knowledge and abilities in conducting and managing research, teaching, and development projects related to language education. 
  • We are particularly interested in candidates with experience and expertise in managing language curriculum, instruction, and materials research and development efforts related to younger language learners. 

Other Requirements:

  • Experience teaching young language learners. 
  • Experience developing language teaching and learning materials. 
  • Experience interacting with clients or researchers/developers outside of the U.S. 
  • Experience managing teams of researchers and developers. 
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods. 
  • Evidence of attention to detail and ability to maintain complex schedules in a timely manner.
