In our twenty-first-century moment, there seem to be ever-widening rifts across various groups and factions of society in the United States. The classroom can be a space to open minds, build solidarities, and expand common ground through antiracist, queer, and anti-oppressive pedagogies. This roundtable seeks presentations on courses, assignments, and projects that, for example, expand beyond the confines of the traditional classroom to engage the community or directly incorporate social justice work and activism. From disrupting heteronormative assumptions to incorporating cross-cultural narratives and decolonizing our syllabi, this panel invites educators who take a concretely anti-oppressive approach to their work in the classroom to share ideas and materials in a collaborative session. Following the presentations will be ample time for open discussion between the participants and audience members.
Emphasizing an intersectional approach to anti-oppressive pedagogies, this roundtable seeks to highlight work already being done across classrooms, build solidarity among like-minded educators, and create a space to share and develop ideas for new assignments and course material. Ideally this session will both take stock of places where this work is currently happening, as well as look to the future for other concrete ways to promote equity in the classroom and in communities more broadly.
