With these positions, we want to expand our research in biomass conversion and fermentation to promote a biobased economy and support the UN Sustainable Development goals.

  • PhD project 1. Development and Integration of Sustainable Processes for Biomass Fractionation. The PhD student will be expected to develop research activities such as pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass, process optimization and integration, and sustainability assessment. Candidates should have laboratory experience / knowledge in biomass fractionation and process optimization. Knowledge in processes using CO2, techno-economic and/or life-cycle analyses will be considered a plus.
  • PhD project 2. Microbial conversion of CO2 into value-added products. The PhD student will be expected to develop research activities such as microbial cultivation (mainly bacteria), cell factory engineering, physiological analysis and sustainability assessment. Candidates should have laboratory experience / knowledge in microbial processes and/or fermentation. Knowledge in cell factory engineering, adaptive laboratory evolution of microbial strains, techno-economic and/or life-cycle analyses will be considered a plus.
  • PhD project 3. Bioprocess intensification for xylitol production from renewable resources. The PhD student will be expected to develop research activities such as saccharification and fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass, yeast cell factory engineering and process optimization in bioreactor. Candidates should have laboratory experience / knowledge in biomass fractionation (pretreatment, hydrolysis) and fermentation. Additional knowledge in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, bioreactor operation and/or cell factory engineering will be considered a plus.
  • PhD project 4. Design and application of microbial consortia for enhanced biomanufacturing. The PhD student will be expected to develop research activities such as cell factory engineering, microbial cultivation, physiological analysis, process design and optimization. Candidates should have laboratory experience / knowledge in microbial processes and/or fermentation. Additional knowledge in cell factory engineering and/or adaptive laboratory evolution of microbial strains will be considered a plus.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • The PhD student will be expected to develop research activities as indicated in the description of the chosen PhD project;
  • The PhD student will be expected to familiarize her/himself with relevant background literature and disseminate the acquired knowledge to other group members through seminars and/or study groups;
  • The PhD student will be expected to write scientific papers and present her/his results at national/international scientific conferences;
  • The PhD student will be expected to act in the supervision of MSc and BSc students.
