The Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream, tenure-track appointment in Theatre, Theatre History, and Dramaturgy at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). Recognizing the underrepresentation of Black faculty, this opportunity is to support the University’s Affirmative Action program and has been developed based on the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code. The position is part of a cohort hire of fourteen new colleagues at York University, including hires across a number of faculties and a wide range of areas and fields. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant scholarly community at York, where we aspire to achieve equity and diversity in all areas, including race equity.

A PhD or DFA by the start of the appointment, with a record or promise of international professional recognition in Theatre History and/or Dramaturgy is required. Preference will be given to applicants who have a clearly articulated program of research and/ or professional practice and specialization in one or more of the following areas: Black Theatre History and Historiography; Performance, History and Decolonization; Global Black and BIPOC Performance Cultures; Performance and Histories/Legacies of Slavery; African Theatre and Performance; New Play Dramaturgy/Production Dramaturgy/ Cultural Dramaturgy/ Ethnographic Dramaturgy; Postcolonial Theory and Performance; Black Feminist/Queer Theory and Performance; Critical Race Theory; Race and Disability.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research/research creation at the highest level. We acknowledge that within higher education in Canada, traditional or conventional academic pathways in research can reinforce biases in the filling of faculty posts. We encourage applications that may not fit this mold and challenge traditional notions of scholarship and research.

Candidates must provide evidence or the promise of internationally recognized research excellence as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals or books in the field; presentations at major conferences and; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees (although we typically receive written references we are open to receiving references via video if this is a preferred means of communication).

Candidates should show excellence or the promise of excellence in teaching at the college or university level and in scholarly research and publication in the area of performance and Theatre and Performance Studies. We are especially interested in candidates conversant in the performance histories of the Black Diaspora with close ties to, and experience in, working with BIPOC communities. We also welcome applications from candidates with research expertise in Black performance in Canada and in other global contexts.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of the promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
