Main Duties/Responsibilities


• Conduct own and original research

• Independently plan, carry out and interpret experimental and modelling work on microstructure behaviour.

• To contribute to writing bids for research funding 

• To critically analyse the data using a range of methods, develop new conceptual models and further develop the understanding of the physics involved.

• Present project’s findings and progress

• To apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding 

• To disseminate research findings for publication in peer reviewed journals, presentations at international conferences and posters at national and international conferences

• To supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where 

• To contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods 

• To undertake management/administration arising from the research project

• To contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration 

• To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

• To present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

• To identify, build and maintain new collaborations with national/international companies

• To manage the project in collaboration with Prof. Norton.

• To manage project finances in collaboration with Prof. Norton


Scope of Role


• Contribute to writing bids for future funding in the area (both for Research Councils and Industrial collaborators)

• Operate within area of specialism 

• Analyse and interpret research findings and results 

• Take part in meetings with interested industry

• Give talks at international meetings as appropriate

• Help manage and run the Product Microstructure group in Chemical Engineering


Person Specification 


• Have a good first degree in a relevant subject (Physical Science or Engineering)

• Completed, or near completion of, a PhD in a relevant subject, ideally in the field of food microstructure or microstructural engineering, particularly in the emulsions or hydrocolloids area (or be in possession of equivalent relevant research experience)

• A proven track record in relevant research area (e.g. emulsification processes/ gel processing)

• A proven track record of innovation and inventiveness

• Possesses sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and/or research methods and techniques to establish new research programmes

• Experience in collaborating with national and international industrial and academic partners is essential

• Skills to drive the programme forward

• Experience of other related areas of food processing and production (e.g. experience in measurement rheology, tribology and texture analysis) is desirable

• Some experience in complimentary modelling of the behaviours of food structures would be desirable

• Experience in the supervision of PhD students would be an advantage

• High level analytical capability

• Ability to communicate complex information clearly

• Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively

• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
