The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a 1-year fixed-term Research Assistant position starting on 1 February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is a unique opportunity to join a new research team that will conduct a large-scale study of the social mobility of siblings born over most over the 20th century in more than 10 countries. The research project "Social Class Mobility in Comparative Perspective: Bringing Siblings In" (SIBMOB) is hiring a Research Assistant who will play a crucial role in bringing the project forward. The team is located in an engaging and collaborative work environment at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen.

Job content
The SIBMOB project, which is funded by the European Research Council, will examine the social class mobility of siblings in more than 10 countries. The project’s novel contribution is to extend the conventional approach to social mobility in sociology to consider the mobility of the entire sibling group in a family, rather than just the mobility of single individuals. The project’s overall ambition is to advance our understanding of why some countries are more socially mobile than other countries by explicitly considering the social processes that operate at the level of families.

The main role of the Research Assistant is to bring together, organize, and recode the extensive set of data sources on which the SIBMOB project will be based. The aim is to construct a large database containing information on the mobility experiences of siblings. The database will consist of data from more than 20 surveys from more than 10 countries around the world. Moreover, the Research Assistant will work on synthesizing information from country-level databases on different social and economic indicators. The Research Assistant will work in close collaboration with the project PI (Associate Professor Kristian Bernt Karlson) and a postdoctoral researcher. The candidate is also expected take part in the academic life of the department and will be part of the research group Welfare, Inequality, and Mobility.

For further information, including more details on the SIBMOB project, please contact project PI Associate Professor Kristian Bernt Karlson (

The successful applicant is expected to have a

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the social sciences (e.g., sociology, economics, or political science), and
  • experience with working with survey data and/or administrative registers (such as the Danish Administrative Registers).

Experience with working with panel, clustered, and/or multi-level data is an advantage but not a requirement.
