A 3-year PhD fellowship is available in organic chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, DTU from February 1, 2021 or soon thereafter. The fellowship is funded by a Green Transition grant from Independent Research Fund Denmark and will be carried out under the supervision of Professor Robert Madsen. The purpose of the project is to develop new radical reactions on glycerol to generate renewable products with potential high-value applications.

Responsibilities and tasks
Glycerol is formed in large quantities as a coproduct in the industrial production of biodiesel. The main tasks of the candidate will be to perform radical reactions between glycerol and several olefinic and aromatic compounds in order to generate new carbon-carbon bonds. The products will be further subjected to eliminations with acid to provide novel building blocks with possible applications in the polymer industry. In addition, advanced NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations will be used to provide a fundamental understanding of radical reactions with glycerol.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The successful candidate will have a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering and a strong background in experimental organic chemistry.
