UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP) is a leading international research and advisory institution on energy, climate and sustainable development, within the Department of Technology, Management and Economics   at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). As a collaborating centre of UN Environment (UNEP), UDP works with a large range of international institutions, national governments, and research institutions, to assist countries in their efforts to move towards a climate resilient and sustainable development. UDP has a staff of approximately 70 professionals from 26 different countries with backgrounds covering economics, science, engineering, and energy and environment planning. UDP currently implements project activities in more than 60 developing countries.

The Research Assistant is placed in the section on Business Models & Finance, which seeks to support developing countries and emerging economies on early stage project/investment preparation and development of enabling policy frameworks for investments. This includes technical and financial rapid assessment, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies. The section also develops financial architecture  and models for implementation and replication, all of it to bridge the existing gaps preventing or slowing down green investment in developing countries and cities. The section represents a consolidation and an expansion of UDPs areas of engagement towards working more directly with business models, the private sector and financial institutions.

UDP is looking for two highly skilled and engaged Research Assistants. One RA with interest and expertise within District Energy Systems, and one RA with interest and expertise within the broader Energy Efficiency area in industry and cities, including smart energy, smart buildings and smart cities, and working both with public and private sector.

The work of the Research Assistant will be carried out in close collaboration with (and under supervision of) the BMF section's management and the BMF team of senior staff. The Research Assistant will in some cases also be required to work in relation to other sections of UDP, and be required to work on projects that cuts across the sections. An informal set of rules guide the process of assigning tasks to the Research Assistant.

Specific tasks will include, but not be limited to:

  • Provision of technical inputs and support to the implementation of specific projects. This includes energy efficiency projects in relation to the Copenhagen Center on Energy Efficiency and District Energy Systems (cooling and heating) projects, and projects relating to business cases and finance.
  • Assisting project progress- technical and financial reporting;
  • Planning and facilitation of trainings, webinars, workshops and conferences - both in terms of substance and logistics e.g. preparing training materials for capacity building, presenting on certain topics, follow up including preparation of the proceedings/minutes;
  • Qualitative and quantitative data collection (from public and private sources) and processing. Conducting analytical work based on data. Preparing technical reports and communications material. Developing quantitative and qualitative energy efficiency user friendly tools (EXCEL-based) associated with the ongoing project activities.
  • Assisting with the preparation of new proposals and fundraising;
  • General research support, including support to in-depth analytical and empirical research to inform new knowledge and insights - feeding into research publications and translating research into more accessible policy briefs
  • Assistance to implementation of administrative tasks
  • Representation of UDP in meetings (including international meetings). Participation in project related missions to developing countries. Interaction with a wide range of partners and stakeholders, building up global networks
