Тип: PhD position;

Для кого: For researchers;

The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI)  invites you to apply for a PhD position focused on graph/matroid polynomials and their applications.

This position will support research in algebraic and topological graph theory, especially graph polynomials and their applications. You should enjoy working with graphs, digraphs, ribbon graphs, or matroids, particularly by using algebraic and computational tools to extract information from their polynomial invariants.

The area of graph polynomials is highly active, with new applications and new graph polynomials being discovered each year. Moreover, a wide range of approaches enhance the problems in this area. These may include expanding the domains into e.g. (delta) matroid and topological graph theory, applying algebraic techniques to the polynomials themselves, studying the zeros and comparative properties of polynomials, and computational complexity questions. The scope of the work may also include any of the many applications of graph polynomials, such as phase transitions in physical systems, DNA sequencing and self-assembly, or knot invariants.

What are you going to do?

You will:

  • perform research on graph/matroid polynomials and their applications;
  • be part of the research group Discrete Mathematics and interact with its senior and junior members;
  • contribute to educational programs at the University of Amsterdam.

What do we require?

  • A Master’s degree in Mathematics or closely related field with a substantial mathematics component;
  • a strong interested in graph theory and its applications;
  • excellent writing and communication skills in English.
