Tallinn University has announced a public competition for the position of Professor of Sociology of Work and Education. The elected candidate commences work on the first career level of the position (associate professor) with the aim of supporting their development into a leader of the relevant study and research field in Tallinn University, and moves to the second career level of the position (professor) by way of evaluation.

Description of the field of the academic work: The professorship is aimed at contributing primarily to the research field of sociology of work and education, this both in terms of research and training. Prioritised research lines/interests are: mobility studies (intra and/or intergenerational social mobility), labour market mobility (including labour market entry and exit, transitions within the labour market, career/employment breaks, work-family reconciliation, etc.); educational transitions; the effect of regulations and institutional environment on mobility opportunities; systems of knowledge and skills in the society; working environment and organisation;  lifelong learning and the factors affecting it.

School context: The School of Governance, Law and Society (SOGOLAS) at Tallinn University is a competence centre for research and development in social sciences where it is possible to study at the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral level. SOGOLAS combines political sciences, international relations, law, sociology, demography, social work and social pedagogy. The research and development activities at SOGOLAS focuses on key issues of the development of contemporary society and is characterized by a wide range of topics, including social protection and well-being, governance and civil society, human rights, social stratification and social cohesion, life-style and values, demographic challenges. The diversity of topics offers good opportunities for interdisciplinary research, problem-centred approach, and integration between SOGOLAS study areas and other units at Tallinn University. SOGOLAS has broad international network which helps to ensure high-quality research and teaching. Effective cooperation with external stakeholders enables SOGOLAS to play an active role in policy making and innovative practice design.

The strategic importance of the position
The relevance of the field to the development priorities of TLU, Estonia and Europe: Work carried out within this professorship is related to specific development plans: the Lifelong Learning Strategy 2015–2020, Knowledge-based Estonia 2014–2020; the Estonian Entrepreneurship Growth Strategy 2020; the Information Society Development Plan 2020; the Estonia 2030 strategy. TLU also holds currently the field of responsibility of the sociology, culturology and political science and civic education study fields (Estonian strategy of education and the Administrative Contract (Haldusleping)).
The strategic importance of the position within the school and how it relates to the other planned tenure and non-tenure positions: The position of professor supports the realisation of the aims of the open society and governance focus field in the Tallinn University Development plan. It is important regarding the function of the professorship as well as sustainability that the field currently already has the required expertise based on which it is possible to develop new topics, advance already discussed topics, and restart some others. Maintaining current strengths, involving new experts, and having the opportunity to rely on postgraduate students in the long run as well creates a favourable context for establishing and developing the professorship. The professorship is expected to contribute to the study program in the field of sociology and other social sciences as well as develop further cooperation with the field of educational sciences. The professorship is well-linked and at the same time complementing the other existing and planned professorships in the areas of sociology and politics and government. The professorship directly supports the aims of the “Society and open governance” focus field of the University to develop an interdisciplinary and problem-focused research area that interprets the development of society and links to other SOGOLAS professorships (such as social policy, especially in its part focusing on opening institutional contexts regarding welfare state models; also research developed on the topic of (new) human rights). Professorship further supports interdisciplinary cooperation between SOGOLAS and School of Educational Sciences.
