Main purpose

As a member of a team, led by the Section Head, the Nuclear Engineer develops and implements IAEA activities to increase relevant capabilities within interested Member States for policy making, strategic planning and technology development in the areas of Research Reactor fuel cycle management, operations and maintenance, modernization of refurbishment and new Research Reactor projects.


The Nuclear Engineer fulfills several roles within the Group: an expert, providing advice to interested member states on Research Reactor fuel cycle management, operations and maintenance, modernization of refurbishment and/or new Research Reactor and project management including Research Reactor organizational structure optimization and management systems; a project manager, leading and implementing IAEA activities covering a broad range of Research Reactor technical projects to achieve performance goals; a facilitator, encouraging cooperative design and development through communication with members and other IAEA stakeholders of the Technical Working Group on Research Reactors (TWGRR) in relevant subject areas; a technical writer producing and reviewing documents relating to Research Reactors; and a team leader of IAEA missions to interested member states working to address relevant Research Reactor challenges.


The Nuclear Engineer provides advice on Research Reactor issues to high-level national and international technical experts and executives as well as to IAEA programme managers in other sections and departments on programmatic and cross-cutting issues and initiatives.

Functions / Key Results Expected
  • Formulate and implement the IAEA's activities on Research Reactors to meet IAEA programmatic objectives.
  • Provide authoritative information, advice and guidance on Research Reactor management of the fuel cycle, reactor operation and technical projects.
  • As a technical officer, support regular budget and technical cooperation projects in the subject area; evaluate proposals, plan and implement activities; prepare and monitor contracts for the supply of goods and services such as plant technical equipment, external assistance or research; and review the results achieved.
  • Initiate, plan and conduct scientific forums and meetings for Member States to review and discuss the status and progress achieved to overcome Research Reactor related challenges. Undertake studies and comparative assessments of various specific issues.
  • Coordinate/liaise with external institutions and stakeholders; gather, maintain and apply knowledge of international best practice and future trends in the subject area.
  • Develop technical guidelines, documents and technical reports on important aspects of the IAEA's activities related to Research Reactors and update IAEA publications in the subject area.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of all aspects of the management of Research Reactor fuel cycle, reactor operations, technical projects and the infrastructure and organizational structures required to achieve this.
  • Project management skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of developing countries and the procedures for assisting these countries.
  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills for producing and reviewing documents related to Research Reactors.
  • Excellent communication skills for the presentation of IAEA papers at international meetings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with counterparts internal and external to the IAEA by gaining their trust and respect.
  • Ability to establish and achieve mutual goals as part of an effective team.
Education, Experience and Language Skills
  • Advanced university (or equivalent) degree in engineering or nuclear reactor technology.
  • Seven years of professional experience in the area of research reactors.
  • Experience in international cooperation with proven ability to participate effectively in a multinational and multidisciplinary team with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Experience in technical writing in English for producing and reviewing documents in the subject area.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. Knowledge of any other official IAEA language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) desirable.
