The conference will explore the rich legacy of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) in its many facets – intellectual, religious, political, and artistic – from his last years in Rome until 1700. He commissioned and edited manuscripts of his works and sermons, marked out his place in intellectual history, and established St. Nicholas Hospital in Kues which continues to this day. After his death, there followed three printed editions of his works, and translations appeared among reformers in Stuart England. Nicholas influenced thinkers including Giordano Bruno and Charles de Bovelles. His ecclesiastical career and critique of the Donation of Constantine fueled later religious and political controversies and reform efforts. In addition, monuments to him endure in Rome and at the Hospital in Kues, which also houses much of his personal library.
