In today’s open flow of information, every citizen plays the simultaneous roles of sender and receiver of messages. This is possible with the advancement of social media in grassroots communication. Unlike the exclusive ownership and a strict flow of information of the old media, the virtual world offers every citizen a venue for information sharing. The conventional media are reinventing themselves in their race to capture the new needs of the audiences. If the traditional media do not adapt to the changing mediascape, they will inadvertently become primitive in the age of new media. The Malaysian government has vowed not to regulate and censor the new media and therefore creates an environment of endless possibilities.
The new media become tools for creating marketplace of ideas for discourse and counter discourse between citizens and the state. The notion of the power and the powerless becomes blurry. The Internet has awakened many citizens to the endless opportunities by widening the democratic space in the 21st century.
Most importantly, freedom of the Internet has eroded the state’s power and the role of gatekeepers. The existing hegemony is easily challenged by citizens and the meta-narrative no longer belongs to the state. The question is, does the distribution of equal power of information to the grassroots improve the well-being of the society? If it does, in what way? If it doesn’t, why not?
To relook, debate and discuss the notion of new media and grassroots participation within the media sphere, the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will be organising the 2nd International Conference on Media and Society (iC-MAS 2015) with the theme Citizen, Connectivity and Control: Democratisation in the 21st Century. The venue of the iC-MAS 2015 will be at DeTAR Putra, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Kota Samarahan, Sarawak on 21st - 22nd April 2015.
The objectives of the conference are:
1. To provide a platform for discourses on various current issues in new media;
2. To discuss the effects of Internet freedom at local and international levels;
3. To encourage and promote the sharing of scientific research findings among scholars both locally and internationally; and
4. To enhance networking among media and communication scholars and practitioners.
