The European Space Agency, in partnership with the International Oceanographic Commission is organising the 5th International GOCE User Workshop at UNESCO, Paris from 25 to 28 November 2014.

This Workshop is intended to provide current and future users of GOCE data products with the opportunity to obtain the latest information on the satellite gravity mission, its performance as well as details regarding the latest release of the data products and user services and tools. This Workshop is seeking the presentation of new results based on GOCE data in all application areas. Prior to the workshop, the European Space Agency plans to release the fifth generation gravity field solutions based on GOCE data.

For exactly 1700 days and from an unprecedented low altitude of 255 km the GOCE satellite acquired a unique data set on the 3D structure of the Earth’s gravity field. During the re-entry phase data from even lower altitudes were collected until the last ground contact of GOCE at less than 120 km altitude. All science data acquired by the GOCE satellite are meanwhile available to the user community, and in summer 2014 Release 5 of gravity field products, including all data collected until end of mission in November 2013, will be made available. The gravity gradient measurements obtained by GOCE are indeed a completely new source of information available to the earth science community. Furthermore, the ultra-sensitive accelerometers on-board GOCE have shown to be useful for several new applications, including temporal gravity field variations, measurements of atmospheric densities and winds, the coupling mechanisms in the thermosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere, and even acoustic wave detection. On top, the re-entry phase of GOCE has enabled a whole range of studies of the re-entry dynamics as well as measurements in layers of the atmosphere normally not accessible for satellite measurements.

The workshop aims to present and discuss state-of-the-art discoveries in the following areas:

- The new GOCE science products, gravity field models and gravity gradient data sets

- Cal/Val and data quality

- Oceanography

- Solid Earth physics

- Geodesy

- Aeronomy

- Innovative applications beyond the original mission objectives

- Science and engineering lessons from the de-orbiting and re-entry phase

- Synergies with other data sets and space missions

- Future gravity field missions

Furthermore the workshop will present the latest version of the GOCE User Toolbox, including hands-on training sessions.
