In the past few years the concept of the nucleus has evolved from it being a porous membrane enclosing the genome to a highly ordered, dynamic subcellular structure that spatially organizes chromatin and chromosomes, is highly integrated with the cytoplasmic cytoskeleton, making it a key node for mechanotransduction and shows tissue and cell specific differences important to its function. The single greatest motivation has been the discovery of a significant number of diseases arising from mutations in many nuclear envelope and lamin proteins. These diseases are shedding new light on current major issues of public health, ageing, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Additional interest has centered on changes in nuclear organization that are associated with cancer and its impact on genome integrity and chromosome stability.
This EMBO Workshop brings together in Singapore, a diverse group of investigators working on nuclear architecture, chromatin, cytoskeleton and diseases associated with nuclear organization. This will provide for extensive multidisciplinary interactions and is of particular interest to many up and coming investigators interested in this dynamic, rapidly evolving area that is of increasing significance to those working on nuclear structure, chromatin and cytoskeletal dynamics in disease.
