Aim of the conference The use of wetland biomass is reflected by research activities going on all over Europe. With this conference we want to bring together the various actors from research, governance and practice that deal with the utilization of reed. The main objective of the conference is building networks, detecting research demands and in particular exchanging experience and information. Another aim is to accelerate progress in reed energy production and its large scale implementation. Therefore this conference not only addresses scientists but also engineers and companies.

ThemeReed as a Renewable Resource (RRR): International Conference on the Utilization of Wetland Plants such as Common Reed, Sedges, Reed Canary Grass, and CattailDateThe Conference takes place from the early morning of February 14ththrough the afternoon of February 16th 2013.Conference languageThe official language of the conference is English. Scope The utilization of wetland biomass offers many opportunities to address the increasing and diversifying demand for biomass. Wetland biomass can substitute fossil resources as a raw material for manufacturing and industry and for energy production, using both traditional and new processing lines and techniques. The cultivation and exploitation of reed like common reed, sedges, reed canary grass, cattail, etc. can provide sustainable land use options for wet areas and can reduce competition between biofuel and food production, while maintaining and restoring many other ecosystem services.  Key Topics

One aim of the conference is to connect various actors from research, governance and practice that deal with the utilization of reed.

 VenueGreifswald - Venue for the Conference is the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald in the north-east of Germany. The city is located at the Bay of Greifswald, on the Baltic Sea. Once northern Germany, and also the surrounding of Greifswald as a catchment area of the Baltic Sea, was covered in wetlands. As a result of drainage and utilization of wetlands, the northern part of Germany is a global hotspot of peat degradation. Similar to other regions, also scientists at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald are discovering innovative techniques to utilize the aboveground biomass (e.g. reed, cattail, sedges, and peat moss) from rewetted wetlands for energetic and material purposes. Through this effort mires are able to re-grow, reducing the pollution of the climate and the environment. The use of wetland plants on these marshlands can produce renewable resources without the competing with food production.Location of the conference - The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg - is an academically independent institution sponsored by the Stiftung Alfried Krupp Kolleg Greifswald. The Institute is intended to assist outstanding research and realize projects in interdisciplinary and international co-operation.
