Launched in 2015, the Luce/ACLS Program in Religion, Journalism & International Affairs (RJIA) is a two-pronged initiative designed to foster new connections between scholars and journalists covering international affairs. The program offers an interrelated set of awards: programming grants for universities and fellowships for scholars in the humanities and social sciences who study religion in international contexts. This initiative is made possible by a grant from The Henry Luce Foundation.

RJIA program grants are available to universities with strengths in the study of religion, journalism, and media to extend their current programs in ways that catalyze interdisciplinary collaborations. In consultation with an external advisory committee made up of scholars of religion, international affairs, and journalism, ACLS will award grants of $60,000 to up to three institutions seeking to connect scholarship on religion to journalistic training and practice. The grants may fund a variety of activities, including new curricular ventures, public programming, or research working groups.

Luce/ACLS Religion, Journalism & International Affairs fellowships are available to scholars pursuing research on any aspect of religion in an international context. Fellows also will have access to resources to help develop the capacities to relate their work to conversations in public policy and the media. During the fellowship term, fellows may remain at their home institutions or take up residence at one of the grantee institutions. In addition, the program will work with grantee institutions to convene all program-year fellows, together with select journalists and public policy experts at symposia during the fellowship year.

A request for proposals from universities for grants to support interdisciplinary research and programming in religion and journalism will be issued on January 11, 2016.

ACLS will open the competition for fellowships in August of 2016 for scholars to take up academic-year fellowships starting in the fall of 2017.
