On April 11, 2015, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis will hold a one-day symposium titled Natural Disasters, Free Speech, and the Death of Painting. Using CAM’s upcoming Joe Goode and Jesse Howard exhibitions as a point of departure, this symposium will present recent scholarship on three topics related to the artists’ work: The Lived Midwestern Experience, Materiality and the Monochrome, and Self-Taught American Aesthetics.
Joe Goode, a native of Oklahoma, and Jesse Howard a life long resident of Missouri, each provide a complementary view of the lived Midwestern experience, creating an innovative framework in which to examine the construction of Middle American identity. Jesse Howard, the self-taught radical, harnesses the act of free speech through his hand painted outdoor signage, while Joe Goode drew upon the Midwestern landscape to revolutionize Southern Californian art in the 1960s and 70s.
