CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow is a premier research institute of international reoute in the area of plant sciences and conservation. The Botanic Garden of the institute is well known all over the world and is the cthird largest Botanic Garden in India. It is also one of the oldest and historical gardens in India, known for its immense contributors towards conservation and sustainable utilization of plant resources of economic, ornamental, horticultural, biological and educational values. The Botanic Garden is a living repository of over 5000 taxa of various groups of plants. Considering rich plant diversity in the Botanic Garden, the Institute has been designated as a Living National Repository by the National Biodiversity Act - 2002. It has also been identified as a Lead Garden by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India for enhancing the ex-situ conservation of rare, endangered and threatened (RET) species.
The national conference on Indian Botanic Gardens was conceptualised with an objective of creating a platform for the exchange of knowledge and odeas on the various aspects of votanic gardens in India.
The major issues to be deliberated in the conference are:
- Present status of ex-situ conservation in Indian Botanic Gardens
- Formulation of a common conservation strategy
- Defining the role of the Botanic Gardens for sustainable utilization of plant species.
