Recent advances in information and communication technologies have significantly changed the way human communicate and perform their tasks. Proliferation of mobile and web-based applications are testimonies of these advancements. In line with this, ‘online outsourcing of tasks to the open crowd’, which is more widely known as ‘crowdsourcing’, has become a trend.
In crowdsourcing, crowds are engaged to solve problems advertised by crowdsourcers through open calls. Through crowdsourcing, various types of task can be accomplished, ranging from as simple as photo taking to as complicated as coming up with humanitarian project proposal. A number of crowdsourcing types to date include crowd wisdom, crowd funding, crowd voting and crowd creation. Coined in 2006, crowdsourcing has brought about a lot of benefits as well as profits to companies. Examples of successful crowdsourcing initiatives include iStockphoto.com, Threadless.com, eRezeki and Freelancer.com. Realising the benefits brought about by crowdsourcing, academics as well as industry alike are actively looking for means to leverage crowdsourcing.
Due to its infancy, research opportunities in crowdsourcing are plenty. This can be seen from the number of crowdsourcing research and applications that mushroom in the recent years. The First International Conference on Collaborative Human Intelligence and Crowdsourcing Applications (ICHICA) aims at providing a venue for researchers from both worlds to converge and deliberate on their research findings, and explore potential future collaboration that can benefit both.
