More than two decades ago, as the regulatory landscape of the corporate world shifted from a national to a global model, Brooklyn Law School recognized the dramatic changes that would impact the study and practice of international business law. It established the Center for the Study of International Business Law in 1987 to address and help shape those changes, becoming a leader in international legal education. The Center was renamed the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law in 2007, in honor of a distinguished alumnus and international business lawyer.

The Center has since become an important resource for the international business law community and future lawyers who practice in a world where globalization is a given. The Center offers the legal community a variety of well-regarded interisciplinary programs that address the changing nature of the international business world. This broad scope of programs has covered such topics as corporate social responsibility, international trade, bankruptcy and insolvency, intellectual property, conflict of laws, antitrust, and social policy. The symposia are frequently co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Journal of International Law or the Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Commercial and Financial Law.

The prestigious International Business Law Fellowship Program, awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, is a central component of the Center and enriches the educational experience for those interested in a career in the field. In addition to the symposia and breakfast roundtables, the fellows are invited to take part in the international economic law forums at which academics present scholarly papers. They also attend brown bag lunches where they learn about the range of careers that are available in international business law and they are able to personally engage with lawyers with real practice experience.

Under the auspices of the Center, Brooklyn Law School also hosts visiting scholars from throughout the United States and around the world. Joining us as Visiting Distinguished Scholars, Scholars-in-Residence, or Visiting Professors, these scholars conduct research and participate in the Center's public activities, including playing key roles in many of our symposia. They also enrich our faculty and student body by giving lectures or teaching courses in international business law.

The Center’s mission – for the present and future – is to contribute to the exploration of timely issues of interest to business organizations, regulators, policy makers, practitioners, jurists, scholars, and future lawyers in this important field.
