Punk emerged in the mid-70s as a musical, aesthetic, cultural, and political reaction to the peace and love of the 60s counterculture and the excessiveness of the 70s rock scene. Rooted in the garage rock developed in the US, UK, and Australia, punk bands created fast, raw, and visceral music that often featured political or anti-establishment lyrics. Punk also embodied a DIY (do it yourself) ethic, which manifested in self-produced albums, guerilla marketing techniques, and an array of experimentation in fashion and body modification.
By late 1976, punk began to spread around the globe, taking root in local scenes that tended to reject association with the mainstream. However, by 1980 punk already began to morph into a multitude of subgenres and more radical forms of musical experimentation. Nevertheless, the punk legacy lives on in many forms as a celebration of rebellion, distinctive personal style, DIY ethic, and a constellation of anti-establishment, anti-corporate, anti-assimilationist ideologies. Punk music and the punk ethos continue to rise around the globe as a call to arms for the disenfranchised, marginalized, exploited, and underserved.
