Climate change is a natural phenomenon and the earth’s climate has changed throughout the history. Prior to the abrupt end of last ice age our planet earth has gone through seven cycles of glacial advances and retreats thereby marking the dawn of the modern climate epoch. Majority of these climate changes are attributed to slight variations in earth’s orbit that change the incoming amount of solar energy. But the present warming trend holds significance as it is induced by anthropogenic activities ever since the advent of industrial revolution and is presently proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades. As a result the planets average surface temperature has increased by 1.1 Degree Celsius since the late 19th century, a change primarily driven by enhanced Carbon Dioxide and other anthropogenic emissions into the atmosphere. As per the IPCC most of the warming occurred in the last 35 years with 2016 being the warmest year on record. The glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world and the sea level has risen by 8 inches in the last century. Climate change impacts are prominently visible with increasing severity in the form of natural disasters like floods in Asia and Europe and hurricanes in USA. These global environmental challenges are the main factors controlling human-wellbeing and security and stability of the future generations. Therefore there is pressing need for attention to climate related disasters for mobilizing broader climate action. This can only be realized by switching to path of low carbon emission, green and sustainable growth, improving disaster resilience and judicious use of natural resources. Developments can only become sustainable when the governments and local communities combine natural disasters prevention and controlling climate change into national growth strategies. The endeavour of the seminar is to disseminate knowledge and share expertise and experiences in climate change, natural disasters and sustainable development issues and challenges. It also strives to build linkage between national and international professionals from diverse fields. The IGU Seminar aims to contribute towards various global initiatives like ICSU Initiatives on Health and Wellbeing in the Changing Urban Environment: a Systems Analysis Approach, UN Disaster Risk Reduction, Making City Resilient, HABITAT III and Future Earth Initiatives.
