The Charles Olson Society will sponsor a session at the American Literature Association Conference, to be held in Boston, May 23-26, 2019. We are interested in abstracts about any aspect of avant-garde poetics in mid-Century American verse, but in particular those that explore the collaborative and/or formal mechanics of projective verse as it developed in the diverse poetry communities of the 1950s and 1960s. While Olson’s essay “Projective Verse” has received ample treatment in studies concerning his own poetry and his direct contemporaries (Duncan/Creeley), other poets also built on projective verse in their own ways, fashioning distinctive styles that are related to projective verse but that transform it as well. Poets like Muriel Rukeyser, Denise Levertov, Diane Di Prima, or LeRoi Jones, among many others, all declared solidarity with projective verse while reshaping the mechanics of breath prosody, syllabic rhyme, and composition by field. What active transformations created a larger field of practices and forms for projective verse? What relationships between poets influenced these developments in the fifties and sixties? Papers that focus on the formal aspects of projective poetics are welcome, as well as papers that consider relationships between poets.
