The Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR in Wachtberg near Bonn examines concepts, methods, and systems for electromagnetic sensors, in particular, in the field of radar and radiometry. The institute is currently working on numerous multinational research projects with academic and industrial partners and has an outstanding network in the international research landscape. As one of 72 institutes of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the FHR is one of the leading radar research institutes in Europe with approx. 330 employees.

Space-based infrastructure and satellite-based services are essential for modern societies. Fraunhofer FHR is one of the leading research institutes in the area of space reconnaissance. Space agencies from all over the world rely on the competence of the institute. The institute’s space observation radar, TIRA, possesses capabilities that are unique in Europe. In addition to the reconnaissance of orbital data for the purpose of collision prevention and re-entry forecasts, the scientists also focus on the identification and analysis of satellites. Satellite-based communication and earth observation services are being increasingly threatened by space debris in near-earth orbit, making it necessary to monitor space debris with radar systems. Furthermore, private companies are increasingly venturing into the space sector and want to establish commercial services.
