Job description

European factories are facing major transitions to adapt to global competitive pressures by developing the necessary key enabling technologies across a broad range of sectors. More specifically, there is an increasing global consumer demand for greener, more customized and higher quality products. The omnipresence of data and data analytics accelerated by amongst others the decreasing cost of sensors and the ever increasing computational power can provide new initiatives to answer the global demand. Next to this is that artificial intelligence is becoming more and more mature offering real potential to be used as a relevant engineering tool in many applications. One of these applications relates to machines as can be found in the products of the European factories such as industrial machines and in its (robotic) assembly. This trend driven by digital evolution and increasing connectivity is often referred to as Industry 4.0.

To increase the technological basis of machines combined with artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong track record in artificial intelligence within mechanical engineering/mechatronics applications, having knowledge on a.o. deep reinforcement learning techniques, data analytics, electromechanical physical modeling, and optimal control methods. The mission of the candidate is to intertwine the hardware of manufacturing industries and their behavioral physics-based models closely with artificial intelligence to increase their operational efficiency, performance and reliability. You will be embedded in an internationally competitive research group, will interact with business developers and will cooperate with researchers active within the Ghent University EEDT research group ( member of Flanders Make (, and the Ghent University IDLab ( member of IMEC (

  • You will map the industrial needs within the Flemish manufacturing sector with respect to machine intelligence.
  • You will set out a technological basis for combining data analytics with physics-based electromechanical models in the context of motion systems.
  • You will set out a technological basis for combining optimal control theory with reinforcement learning techniques.
  • You will build a software platform that is able to handle (big) models and (big) data originating from real use cases within the research group and within industry.
  • You will engage and initiate innovative approaches towards digital condition monitoring of motion systems and smart control of their operations.
  • You will cooperate with researchers active both on the hardware and software side of electromechanical systems within the manufacturing industry.
  • You will map your developed approaches with the industrial needs and initiate collaborations with industry, other research groups and research institutions, both within Flanders as on the European level.
  • You will monitor evolutions in the Flemish manufacturing and initiate routes towards future machine intelligence.

Profile of the candidate

  • You hold a PhD, or should be expecting a PhD in the near future.
  • You have experience in or understanding of electromechanical/mechatronic systems.
  • You have experience in artificial intelligence, modelling of dynamical systems, optimization techniques.
  • You have experience in or understanding of data-driven models and data analytics.
  • You have minimum 4 years or more experience in a highly renowned research institution.
  • The required skills are: working with electromechanical models, artificial intelligence, data-driven models, sensor data, dynamical systems.
  • You have a team player mindset, a strong personality and work in a result-oriented manner.
  • You are creative, willing to work in a multidisciplinary context.
  • You are proficient in oral and written English and have strong communication skills.
  • You are able to extend your network and able to talk on technical matters.
