Dresden is the capital of Saxony – one of the German states which is mostly identical to the former kingdom of Saxony and therefore a city with a long and rich history spanning more than 800 years. Located at the banks of river Elbe Dresden is famous for its art galleries with world-class paintings, the Semper Opera house and multiple famous buildings like the rebuilt Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) which is one of the symbols of German reunifi cation in 1989/90.
But Dresden is not only a city of arts, music and architecture, it is also a city of science. It hosts the Technical University (TU Dresden) which is one of the current 11 German universities of excellence and includes a medical faculty and university hospital. Beside the university in Dresden, a large number of non-academic research institutes belonging to the Max Planck, Leibniz or Fraunhofer Society are located. Many researchers at diff erent institutions and associated small companies are working in the fi eld of biomaterials and related disciplines making Dresden an
optimal place for an ESB event.
The conference will cover all aspects of biomaterial research and we are sure to provide a highly interesting programme– based on the abstracts, submitted by all of you and invited keynote-speakers. We will bring together researchers from both life sciences and engineering, clinicians and company representatives to provide an eff ective environment for stimulating exchange and discussions. The German Society for Biomaterials (DGBM) has decided to not organise a separate meeting this year and therefore both conferences will be combined, providing a comprehensive
insight in biomaterials research in Germany. Venue is the International Congress Centre which is located in the heart of the historic city centre and directly at the banks of the river Elbe, making it a perfect place to enjoy the city after the scientific programme.
Dresden is located less than 2 hours from Berlin by train or car, and close to the Czech as well as Polish border. It has its own international airport and is connected to the high-speed German railroad network thus it can be reached quite comfortably. Finally, not only the city itself, but also the surrounding landscapes are worthwhile visiting with Saxon Switzerland in the East, the Erzgebirge mountains in the South, a huge lake district in the North and the lovely, wide Elbe valley in the West of Dresden where tasty wines are produced. You are therefore kindly invited to combine the congress with a couple of holidays to explore Dresden and its scenery in detail.
