“Saul Bellow calls the city ‘the expression of the human experience it embodies, and this includes all personal history.’” As human beings evolve from primitive to modern, cities evolve as well from ancient to urban; they serve as a sphere out of whose womb civilizations are born, sustained and perish. They are not just concrete spaces but also reflections of human emotion and spirit. Cities have undergone many historical milestones and harbored mysteries; therefore, they are regarded as multi-dimensional texts mirroring and inspiring human development. Cities are contingent upon the perspectives of people, so they can be read individually: they can potentially be one, telling multitudes and vice versa. Each city is unique in terms of having its own characteristics with its suburbs and centers; its taxonomy, its intellectual and tangible architecture as well as its narratives bearing witness to its diversity and dynamism.  Literature and the city engage in reciprocal and intricate acts of writing each other. This multi-dimensional phenomenon thus renders city literature as a genre of its own. It is our aim to explore how literature re-presents the places and sounds of the city.

İstanbul University American Culture and Literature Department welcomes abstracts for 20 minute presentations from American studies, literature, cultural studies, arts and culture, as well as other related fields of research. We especially encourage graduate students (MA & PhD) and early career scholars to apply. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
