The Department for Marine Sciences, founded 2015, brings together expertise in physical oceanography, marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, and marine heritage conservation. The department of Marine Sciences are located with permanent staff in Gothenburg and at the research stations Kristineberg and Tjärnö on the Swedish west coast north of Gothenburg.

Subject area

Biogeochemical cycles of halogens in the Arctic during polar night– a contribution to the international expedition MOSAiC to the high Arctic.

Subject area description

At the Marine Science Department there is a long tradition of Polar science within chemistry and oceanography. The subject area concerns the emissions of biologically produced trace gases, (halocarbons). These compounds are identified as ozone- depleting and are the subject to present and future regulation under international agreements (e.g., the Montreal Protocol). Global budgets of halogenated compounds exist, but the Arctic Ocean is not included in these models, and there is still a large knowledge gap regarding the influence of sea ice-atmosphere interactions during polar night. The changes in sea ice distribution, concentrations and age, especially in the Arctic where the extent of multiyear ice has declined substantially relative to seasonal ice, will affect the atmospheric composition of halogens. Halogen species involved in the depletion of ozone are associated with new sea ice formation, and they accumulate during polar winter. The position is devoted to measurements of halocarbons during the Arctic winter to obtain an understanding of biogeochemical processes during the sea ice growth and their impacts on Arctic tropospheric chemistry. The investigations include the role of ice as a reaction surface for chemical conversion processes, and as a source of halogens to the atmosphere. We will estimate the contribution of seasonal sea ice to the load of halocarbons in the troposphere during polar night and minimize the uncertainties in global flux models of halocarbons through air-sea-sea ice measurements.

Job assignments

The candidate will join an international team participating in the MOSAiC expedition (https://www.mosaic-expedition.org) to the high Arctic. The project will participate in 3 out of 6 legs and the successful candidate should be prepared to join the research vessel Polarstern during the dark period of the year (December 2019 to april 2020, dates to be determined). The practical work will include determination of volatile halocarbons in air, seawater, sea ice and snow with gas chromatography. The candidate will take part in the evaluation of the data together with the international biogeochemistry team and present results in manuscript(s) and at conferences, and communicate the findings at various dissemination activities. The candidate is also expected to take part in other research-related activities at the department, and within the research group in particular. The candidate should also be prepared to join specialized courses in polar bear protection and basic safety according to SOLAS during April to June 2019.

Eligibility

Qualified for appointment as postdoc is a person who has been awarded a PhD degree in a subject area relevant for the position no longer than 3 years ago. Relevant subject areas for this position are marine chemistry, chemical oceanography or equivalent academic disciplines. A candidate with a foreign degree that is judged to be comparable is also eligible.

The candidate should have earlier experience of analytical determinations of trace compounds in seawater and/or air and extensive field work. Experience of working with halogen chemistry is of special merit.

Assessment

Scientific proficiency will be the primary criteria for the assessment of merits.

The scientific proficiency is assessed with a focus on the candidate's capacity and earlier experience of working in the field of marine chemistry.

The assessment is based primarily on scientific publications, on participation in international conferences and workshops and field work experience. The successful candidate will be chosen based on an overall assessment of proficiency and potential within the subject area, the potential and ability to independently carry out the duties of the position, and the abilities to communicate and cooperate with others.
